The Holland Hurricanes experienced success all over the region this past weekend, including a berth in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) women’s rugby finals, several basketball thrillers, and a successful start in women’s volleyball. Here’s a full breakdown of all your recent ‘Canes action.

Women’s Rugby

The women’s rugby Hurricanes are off to the ACAA finals for the second year in a row.

The ‘Canes earned their finals berth and continued their undefeated season with a 63-0 win over the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies on Saturday in Summerside, P.E.I. in the ACAA semi-finals.

Marissa Themeles, Tori Hogan, Bella Walsh, Kinslee Sorrie, Laytaysha Tynes, and Erin Robertson were the scorers. The ‘Canes led 41-0 at the half.

The ‘Canes are set to face Mount Allison in the ACAA championship game on Sunday, November 12 at 2pm at the Canada Games Alumni Place at UPEI. Mount Allison defeated UNB 24-7 in their semi-final game. In regular season action, the ‘Canes defeated Mount Allison 27-19 on October 5. The Hurricanes finished the regular season at 7-0, while the Mounties were 6-1.

Women’s Basketball

The Hurricanes split their games over the weekend in ACAA regular season action; first hosting the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves, before visiting the Mount Allison Mounties on Sunday.

The ‘Canes began their weekend with a big 81-68 win at the McMillan Centre on Saturday against the Seawolves. The ‘Canes got off to a hot start up 29-7 after the first quarter, eventually leading 48-25 at halftime.

The Seawolves gained ground in the second half with several good runs, but it wouldn’t be enough. Lauren Armstrong led the ‘Canes with 18 points while Amy Plaggenhoef added 17.

The ‘Canes then visited Mount Allison on Sunday and faced their first defeat of the season 74-64. Although their first half was strong, a second half rally by the Mounties would catch them off guard. Amy Plaggenhoef led the ‘Canes with 17 points.

Holland College now sits at 2-1 on the season and in third in the ACAA standings.

The ‘Canes will be back in action next weekend on the road, visiting the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) on Saturday at 2pm, before taking on the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils on Sunday at 2:30pm.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s team began their weekend with their first win of the season 96-83 at the McMillan Centre on Saturday against the Seawolves. The ‘Canes held most of the advantage all game and managed to hang on albeit a late effort by the Seawolves. Diangelo Woodside played a strong game and led the ‘Canes with 29 points.

The winning momentum continued into Sunday as the ‘Canes visited Mount Allison and earned their second win of the season, 75-64. The ‘Canes got off to a fiery start with an early 15-point lead and eventually a 36-point first half. Although the Mounties fought back and were as close as to one point behind within the second half, the ‘Canes emerged victorious by the end.

Aaron Simmons led the ‘Canes with 23 points while Woodside added 20.

With the two weekend victories, the ‘Canes improve to 2-1 and sit third in the standings.

Holland College will be back in action on the weekend in Halifax, first taking on the Mystics on Saturday at 4pm, before visiting the Blue Devils on Sunday at 4:30pm.

Women’s Volleyball

The Hurricanes volleyball season got underway this past weekend, starting with road matchups.

The women’s team began their weekend with a commanding straight-sets win over the Université de Saint-Anne (USTA) Dragons in Church Point, Nova Scotia. Jenna O’Neill and Morgan White led the ‘Canes with six kills each.

The ‘Canes then traveled to Truro to play the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (Dal AC) Rams and defeated them 3-1. White more than doubled her previous performance with an impressive 13 kills this time around.

The Hurricanes, now 2-0, will return to action next weekend with two more road matches. First, on Saturday, they will visit the Mount Allison Mounties for a 2pm match in Sackville, New Brunswick, before visiting the UKC Blue Devils on Sunday at 12pm.

Men’s Volleyball

The men’s team also began their season on the road, playing a double-header versus the USTA Dragons on Saturday and Sunday.

Individual stats were not available at the time of writing.

It was a straight-sets loss on Saturday, followed by a four-set loss on Sunday.

The Hurricanes went ahead and won the opening set on Sunday, 25-23, but went on to drop the next three, 25-21, 25-18 and 25-18.

The ‘Canes, 0-2, will have a weekend off to prepare for their home-openers on the weekend of Nov. 18-19 against UNBSJ.

Football

The Hurricanes football season came to an end this past Saturday in a fierce 30-26 defeat to the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Reds.

A close match that didn’t see a score until the final minutes of the first quarter as the Reds led 2-0. The second quarter was a roller coaster, with the Reds extending their lead to 9-0, but a huge final seven minutes saw the ‘Canes rally back to lead 11-9.

Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, the Reds stormed back in monstrous fashion, leading 30-12 by the final minutes of the fourth quarter. The ‘Canes put in a valiant effort within the final two minutes to get within four, but it wasn’t enough.

The Reds’ win gives them home field advantage in the AFL (Atlantic Football League) Championship Game against the Dalhousie Tigers on November 11 in Fredericton.
